One Movement Showcase Music Festival Artists: Third Announcement

One Movement for Music Perth (OMFM) makes another major step forward this week in unveiling the third round of speakers and showcasing artists for the event, held October 16-18 2009.

Western Australian Tourism Minister, Dr Liz Constable said that One Movement For Music would create a cutting-edge live-music event, giving thousands of Western Australians and interstate and international visitors access to some of the world’s best new talent.

“With music’s international heavyweights coming to Perth for the conference as well as 80 bands from around the world coming to showcase their music, One Movement for Music Perth is a truly significant international music event” Dr Constable said.

The following artists will appear alongside artists in the first and second showcase festival line-up announcements:

Davey Knowles, One Movement Showcase Music Festival artistDavy Knowles & Back Door Slam (UK) [pictured right] – Davy Knowles fronts his band Back Door Slam, this 22-year-old British phenomenon with an encyclopaedic grasp of blues-rock draws on influences from Robert Johnson to Rory Gallagher and gives it a fresh Celtic feel along the way.

Dappled Cities (Aust) - When you listen to Dappled Cities, you actually see things: vivid colours, strange animals, storybook characters. It’s as if a world that you didn’t know existed, with all of its possibilities, is now within your grasp. After two years of ludicrously intense international touring and songwriting, Dappled Cities have just released their third album, the art pop opus, Zounds.

Passenger (UK) - Passenger is Mike Rosenberg, a singer songwriter with a very different take on pop. The 23-year-old founder pens unsettling songs about stalking, wasted lives and the despair of abandoned dogs, all with an alarming eye for detail.

Hayley Sales (Canada) – Hayley rose to fame after the release of her debut album Sunseed. Best known for her two hit singles What You Want and Keep Driving, she won Female Vocalist Of The Year at the Vancouver Island Music Awards.

Joe Echo (Northern Ireland) - As a prolific writer with an ever-expanding catalogue of songs, former Leya member, Joe Echo, set out in 2008 to perform this new material live in preparation for the recording of his first solo album. As well as his own UK and Irish shows, he’s recently supported, amongst others, The Script, Powderfinger, Eskimo Joe and James Morrison.

TooKoo (China) - TooKoo artfully blends elements of emo, indie, and rock sounds, resulting in rousing, brash and energetic songs with melodies you can’t get out of your head and a lead vocal you won’t forget.

Tijuana Cartel (Aust) – With recent standout performances at Woodford and being labelled the buzz band of the recent East Coast Blues Festival in Byron Bay, no matter where you are over this coming year, you are sure to hear the funky flamenco dance tunes of energetic live act, Tijuana Cartel.

Voltaire Twins (Aust) - These strange siblings make for dangerous dance floor action with their unique brand of dark art-pop. Thrashing live synths over intricate arpeggios, twins Jaymes and Tegan Voltaire croon sweet, sweet nothings over banging beats.

The Queen of the Kimberley, Mary G (Aust) - Mary G, the self-effacing ‘queen of the Kimberley’, is a cult figure across the region and now that the Mary G radio show is national, she speaks weekly to a far wider audience.

Dead Letter Circus (Aust) – In a whirlwind two years, Dead Letter Circus has ascended to the forefront of alternative rock with their fresh take on good rock songs having struck a chord locally and abroad.

Biuret, One Movement Showcase Music Festival bandBiuret (Korea) [pictured left]- Biuret are three beautifully stunning, sexy artists who incorporate strong emotional vocals, infectious live performances and superior musicianship. This, together with their amazing natural talent, energy and charisma, delivers a band that you won’t forget and everyone will want to know about.

Bonjah (Aust) - After the success of singles Bring Back The Fire and Fly, Bonjah’s must-see live show has made them one of the most talked about bands in Australia with a serious buzz growing about the group.

Fergus Brown (Aust) – Sydney songwriter Fergus Brown’s melodic guitar-pop is reminiscent of The Shins, Bon Iver and Ben Kweller, but he is equally aligned with the lyrical peculiarities of artists such as Randy Newman, Jonathan Richman and The Magnetic Fields.

Super VC (China) - In China today, if you say the words ‘rock band’, everyone thinks of SuperVC. With their unique music and style, they have gradually entered everyone’s hearts, especially the younger generation.

Kingston (NZ) - Having just released their debut single Good Good Feeling, Kingston is already placing in the Top 40 NZ singles chart and their distinctive video is proving to be a huge success on NZ music TV.

The Seabellies (Aust) - Since forming in late 2005, The Seabellies have already built up an enviable reputation based on the band’s explosive live performances and its acclaimed debut EP.

Andrew Paul Woodworth (USA) - Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones called him the best lyricist he had ever worked with. At the L.A. Music Awards 2004 he was chosen “Male Vocalist of the Year”, and his music has been utilised for the Roswell-Show, by ESPN, the biggest sports broadcaster worldwide, and by the makers of the cult series Buffy, the Vampire Slayer.

All Mankind (Aust) – With thousands of fans from all across the globe, All Mankind spend significant amounts of the year touring throughout Australia, the US and Europe and the Sydney-based quartet’s widely acclaimed first single Can You Hear Me has already been receiving strong airplay in the US and UK.

Pentagram (India) - Randolph, Shiraz, Papal and Vishal came together in 1994, with a strong need to play individual, original and unique music. This was as much a reaction to the stagnating Indian Rock scene, populated by bands playing mostly cover music, as it was a primal instinct.

Marya Roxx (Estonia) - In 2009, Marya Roxx has turned from bass player with platinum-selling pop rock sensation Vanilla Ninja into the credible rock/metal artist she always aspired to be. Described by Rock Hard magazine Germany as ‘one of the great surprises of 2009’, things are already looking good for Marya Roxx and it looks like things are only going to get better.

Jason Bentley DJ Set (USA) - Music Director and host at KCRW Santa Monica, Jason is equally at home supervising music for film (as evidenced by The Matrix trilogy) or serving in an A&R capacity.

Hercules in NY (Aust) – Fresh from their first national tour, Hercules in NY released their new single, I Came Alive, to rave reviews in August.

The Touch (Aust) – If you combined the interlocking riffs of Television and the electronic dance sounds of Bloc Party, it might sound something like the winner of the SA Arts initiative, The Touch.

Fefe Dobson, One Movement Showcase Music Festival artistFefe Dobson (Canada) [pictured right] – Over the years, Fefe Dobson has built up a loyal audience of kids who have been continuously blown away by her sassy, pop/rock style and stunning performances. With her sophomore release, Joy, this petite powerhouse is ready to become a household name that everyone will be talking about.

Melodramas (UK) - Melodramas’ short story has, unsurprisingly, been dramatic. Having formed in the summer of ‘08, the pop band decided to test their material at the prestigious ‘Showcase’ competition, even though they had never previously played live.

I Heart Hiroshima (Aust) – Winner of the Street Press Australian initiative, Queensland’s I Heart Hiroshima will release their much-agitated second album The Rip in early October before taking the stage at One Movement for Music Showcase Festival.

Canvas Kites (Aust) – Canvas Kites are a new Sydney trio led by former Mercy Arms frontman Thom Moore, alongside Brett Adrien and Alex Knight. As a threesome, they play music for lovers of Rough Trade cassettes, chanson pop and old Fender guitars.

The Pryor Theory (Aust) – Winner of the Vic Rocks initiative, The Pryor Theory’s 2005 formation was primarily the result of their near over-exposure to the DJ and Hip Hop scenes in Melbourne circa 2002 to 2005.

Wagons (Aust) - The Wagons’ live show is a performance like no other, treading a line between a Vegas ’70s showroom extravaganza and a bunch of undertakers letting loose at a rock festival, headlined by Canned Heat. Wagons are a band of characters unmatched in contemporary Australian music. They shine as a collective and Henry Wagons’ songs are deceptively simple yet constructed according to sturdy designs and made of real flesh and blood and spirit.

DP (Hong Kong) - The duo of Dave Wong (vocals and bass) and Paul Maclean (drums) conjure a thundering sound that is somewhere “’twixt rock and metal” – a primordial cacophony, summoned from the ancient gods.

The Speedbumps (USA) - The Speedbumps released their sophomore LP Apple Tree in early 2009. Artists ranging from Nick Drake and Iron & Wine, to Wilco and Radiohead influence their sound. The band has shared the stage with several national acts, including OKGO, Andrew Bird, Anathello, Chrissie Hynde and Matt Nathanson, among others.

Red Ink (Aust) - As the rest of the country recovers from its 18-month obsession with electro-pop and hip-hop, Red Ink have spent that time honing their craft to an impressively sharp edge and are constantly in search of the perfect Red Ink song – one not limited by terms as simple as ‘indie pop’, ‘post-punk’ or any such nonsense.

The Beards (Aust) – The Beards are a bearded four-piece from South Australia whose catalogue consists entirely of songs about beards and having beards! With styles ranging from folk to rock to jazz to metal, The Beards prove themselves as talented musicians and diverse songwriters.
