Four Questions With Art Vs Science

Sydney electronic-dance band Art Vs Science

According to their MySpace, Art Vs Science is “a psychological experiment. Their songs are crafted carefully according to principles abstracted from the study of human responses to music. Each show is a test of these responses and how they differ in comparison to the manipulation of certain musical elements. ” Fresh from wowing crowds at Parklife, the trio are preparing for their One Movement performance in Perth. Drummer Dan W. Sweat answered four questions for One Movement Word.

Dan, what’s your favourite song this week?

What do you hope to gain from the One Movement festival and conference?

Hopefully we can put ourselves in front of an international audience that we wouldn’t normally get the chance to at this stage in our career. Would be a good way to start travelling. I like planes.

Which artists’ showcase sets are you most looking forward to watching?

Tigarah, from Japan. We are collaborating with her on a song that we’ll perform on the Sunday, thanks to the kind folk at APRA. She is meant to be like the Japanese M.I.A.! We’ll be sure to terrify her with our well-spoken English, and then insult her with our poorly spoken Japanese. Ciao!

One Movement’s tagline is “Artist, Industry, Fan United.” What do you think needs to change in order to unite the music industry with its artists and fans?

Well gigs are the way to really unite band with fan. Otherwise, yikes, there’s probably more than enough artist / fan interaction going on right now. Facespace, mybook, twitterpedia… All that stuff means that an artist you like and respect and revere can tell all the important things about his craft, such as when he/she goes to the bathroom or what he/she had for lunch.

I say the less interaction the better. Bring back some mystery, please!

Then again, we use all of the above things. We’ll use the Nuremburg defence: We was just taking orders!

Take orders from Art Vs Science - like “use your flippers to get down!” - at the One Movement Showcase Music Festival. They play the Crossover Stage at 7.40pm on Sunday 18th October, while their duet with Tigarah is at 4.30pm on the same stage (full timetable here); follow them on Twitter and Facebook, and watch the video for ‘Parlez-Vous Francais?’ below.
