Four Questions With Jason Bentley

While he’s best known in the DJ and production/remix sectors - and, as of November 2008, music director for the Los Angeles radio station KCRW - Jason Bentley is equally at home supervising music for film (as evidenced by The Matrix trilogy) or serving in an A&R capacity, which he has done for both Madonna’s Maverick label as well as his own Quango Music Group. Bentley eloquently answered four questions for One Movement Word ahead of his trip to Perth as both conference speaker and DJ.
What’s your favourite song this week?
Ironically, it’s by an Australian band called The Middle East with their song ‘Blood’. [video embedded below]
It’s a little melancholy, but I like the vibe. Their debut EP is out in the US in October, and I believe they will be coming to Austin for SXSW festival in the Spring of 2010.
What do you hope to gain from the One Movement Festival and Conference?
As Music Director of KCRW, it’s important to me that the station is an international crossroads for music and culture. I think we already have an international reputation, and of course the real growth in listenership is global through our web based programming. I think it’s important to be out there exploring other regions and discovering new music.
Which artists’ showcase sets are you most looking forward to watching?
Well my “home team” support goes to Meiko [pictured right]. She’s a regular at a great Hollywood music hall called Hotel Cafe and we play a lot of Meiko on KCRW. She’s an alt-folk singer songwriter. Other than that, I’m curious to see if Frankmusik can generate the kind of energy live that I hear on the record. His is a frenetic pop sound that hopefully will translate in live performance.
One Movement’s tagline is “Artist, Industry, Fan United”. What do you think needs to change in order to unite the music industry with its artists and fans?
These different facets of music are all interdependent. Most times their concerns are very different, but in order to succeed in the brave new digital world the artist, industry, and fan have to come closer together and understand each other better. The controls that used to apply to the value of music barely exist anymore, and moving forward there has to be a mutual appreciation for how all of this works and what it’s worth.
Jason Bentley appears at One Movement For Music Perth as a MUSEXPO Asia Pacific panelist (full program here) and a DJ; he’ll play a set on the Breakthrough Stage at 9.05pm on Saturday 17th October (full timetable here).
