The Independent Times panel: “Media - Extra Extra Read All About It”

Saturday, 17 October 2009, 10.00am: Media - Extra Extra Read All About It at the Independent Times
Digg it, Twitt it, Tube it, MOG it, Blog it, Stream it, Print it and Broadcast it! How is the independent sector taking advantage of changing media environment? This session examines some of our panellists’ favourite recent campaigns across different media platforms and territories, executed on practical indie budgets. Media coverage has never been more accessible for us all, but on the other hand it’s never been more of a maze.
Venue: Rydges CBD Hotel, Level One, Conference Floor
Speakers:
• Jerry Soer, band manager and blogger (AUS)
• Carney Nir, New Media Manager, Secret Service Artist Management and Dew Process Recordings (AUS)
• Russell Thomas, Founder, Kaos Management (AUS)
• Steve McClure, Journalist/ Broadcaster, Freelance (JPN)
• Adam McArthur, Moshtix (AUS)
Moderator - Lars Brandle, journalist, Billboard (AUS)

Toward the end of the panel, conversation turned to innovative online music promotion techniques. Jerry Soer of whothehell.net offered Bluejuice’s ‘Broken Leg‘ video as an example, and Carney Nir of Secret Service Digital described how she approached the online marketing for that campaign on behalf of the band’s label, Brisbane indie Dew Process. Watch Jerry and Carney speak below:
The ‘Broken Leg’ campaign included a redeveloped microsite (’World Skipping Championships 2009‘), custom Facebook fan pages for the Bluejuice vocalists’ fake personas (’Venom‘ and ‘Mr Invisible‘) and soon, Carney says, tracksuit merch sales! The full-length version of ‘Broken Leg’ is below.
